First national water-saving award to be announced at Garden Expo

19 June 2008

The winner of the first national award recognising outstanding water-saving products and services will be announced at the official opening of this year's Queensland Home Garden Expo to be held at the Maroochy Showgrounds, Nambour on July 11.

The Smart Approved WaterMark Awards recognise products which have been proven to save water based on innovation, design, marketability and sustainability.

The finalists for the awards, which are all Queensland-based companies, were selected from over 140 products nationally which met the criteria of Australia's outdoor water saving labelling program for products and services.

The finalists selected include Planter Technology's planting container, the Smart Pot, the Hughie Sink, Nature Flow's household sewerage treatment system and Water Watch's programmable shower timer.

Event Coordinator, Marion Beazley believes that these awards will help emphasise the value of sustainability and water conservation nationally and assist in the promotion of water-wise gardening at this year's event.

“We are delighted that Smart Approved WaterMark has chosen the Home Garden Expo to launch these national awards and water conservation will, as always, be an important part of this year's event,” said Marion.

“This time last year we were faced with tightening water restrictions and even though our dam levels are much improved, wise water usage still needs to be a high priority.”

Col Campbell, Annette McFarlane and Jade Woodhouse are just a few of the experts on hand who will be sharing valuable tips on how to minimise water use and how best to retain the water levels in your garden through mulching and other preventative measures.

“This year's Expo will feature a range of relevant exhibitors with water tanks, grey water diverters, water-wise plant selections as well as lectures regarding how best to prepare your garden which we expect to be very popular at this year's event,” said Marion.

The Home Garden Expo, Queensland's number one gardening event, promises to be bigger than ever with the organisers having to extend the site area to accommodate the enormous demand from exhibitors.

The Smart Approved WaterMark Awards will be announced at the Expo's Opening Ceremony at 10:30am on Friday, 11 July. For more information, please visit www.queenslandhomegardenexpo.com.au or for more information about the Smart WaterMark visit www.smartwatermark.org.
