The art of gardening for a $9,000 prize

June 26, 2007

Landscaping is the unique art form of garden design and this July will see some of the Coasts' leading landscape designers showcase their creative talents in a bid for the top design award at this year's 23 rd annual Queensland Home Garden Expo.

One of Australia 's largest and most celebrated garden events, the Queensland Home Garden Expo is expected to attract over 20,000 garden lovers and hundreds of horticulture professionals to the Maroochy Showgrounds in Nambour from July 6-8.

Full-size garden displays provide the centrepiece for this bigger-than-ever-before annual event. This year's landscaped gardens will focus on unique design concepts such as water-wise gardening, permaculture, sustainability and gardening with native plants.

The Garden Expo Landscape Challenge competition will give landscapers and designers the opportunity to compete for three major awards – with a total cash value $9,000. Sponsored by Seven Sunshine Coast, these gardens will offer a peek at the emerging trends of the forthcoming season.

Event Organizer, Marion Beazley says the landscaped gardens this year will be outstanding, with some of the top regional landscape designers and nurseries on-site to construct their own full-size gardens for all visitors to admire.

“The quality of entrants this year has been extraordinary, never before have we been able offer visitors such a fantastic event featuring the coasts best landscape designs,” said Marion.

Construction will begin on the Monday before the event and the gardens will need to be completed by Thursday, July 5 with the prizes being awarded at the event's opening ceremony on Friday, 6 July.

Here's a sneak preview of what the landscapers will be creating next week…

Sunshine Coast Gardener's Paradise

A haven to escape to and relax and enjoy a quite read or simply reflect… is the theme behind the design of Sunshine Coast Gardener's Paradise entry in the Landscape Challenge. The designer, Michael Bounds will create a garden incorporating sensory plantings in raised beds, water feature and paving using a variety of materials.

Landcon Landscape & Concrete Construction

Mark Black will create a courtyard design using feature walls, water movement and massed plantings and a steel work piece as an approach to create an Australian-style outdoor experience.

EWS Landscaping

Damian of Earth, Wind, Sun Landscaping will create a garden featuring Australian native plants to make best use of today's weather conditions – drought tolerant and water-wise. It will be a semi formal, multi-layered design featuring gardens, decks, paving and a water feature.

Rockafella's Landscape Centre

Bob Firth and the team at Rockafellas will be featuring their trademark rock walls incorporating plants and paving.

Sunshine Coast Wollemi Pine Nursery

Sunshine Coast Wollemi Pine Nursery will be creating a display based on the Fibonacci Spiral which creates 3D landscaped spaces that embrace the mystique-themed concept objectives. The garden combines Jurassic Wollemi Pines with dinosaur footprints, Gubbi Gubbi artefacts and eucalypt species.

Ends.
