Saxophonist to dazzle the Coast

April 4 , 2005

Internationally renowned clarinet and saxophone player, Andy Firth, will perform with the Sunshine Coast Concert Band and the Steve Newcomb Trio after hosting a workshop at the Wises Road Baptist Church on April 16.

The talented musician and composer is a guest of the Sunshine Coast Grammar School music department and has performed with the likes of B. B. King, Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, the Kenny Ball Jazz Band and Andy Cooper. He has also performed with many of the major Australian symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles as a soloist.

“We are delighted to welcome such a talented performer to the Sunshine Coast and appreciate his willingness and dedication to sharing his skills with other musicians,” said Charlie Simm from the Sunshine Coast Grammar School music department.

“His ability is amazing - with his blindingly fast and fluent technique or his soulful tones he has mesmerized audiences across Australia and the world.”

Andy will host a music workshop from 12 – 1:30pm (tickets $25) to inspire and educate local musicians and to offer some tips on how to improve their tone and listening ability.

Following the workshop Andy will perform with the Sunshine Coast Concert Band (formerly the Caloundra City Concert Band) and their music director Ken Chadwick (L.Mus.A), in a concert including classics such as Clarinet Candy and Yakkety Sax.

The second half of the concert will see Andy accompany the Steve Newcomb Trio including renditions of Let it be, Georgia on my Mind and a selection of Benny Goodman classics.

Tickets for the concert ($15), the workshop ($25) or a combined workshop and concert ticket ($35) can be bought in advance at the reception of the Sunshine Coast Grammar School in Mons Road, Forest Glen.
